Arthur Welter and Cargolux are taking their first steps into the zero-emissions
Arthur Welter and Cargolux have officially inaugurated the new Hydrogen truck.
This is a Hyundai truck with a body which was not designed for air freight, and which therefore had to be modified and technically adapted in our own workshop. As far as we know, this combination of a hydrogen-powered truck, designed for standard freight, and an airfreight trailer is unique in the world. At least, that’s what Hyundai Europe has confirmed to us.
The truck-trailer combination makes the round trip between the Luxembourg freight center and Frankfurt airport five times a week. Because of its range, it has to refuel in Luxembourg-Bettembourg and again in Frankfurt, which makes us extremely dependent on the operation of the infrastructure. The truck is equipped with two fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity. The truck’s seven tanks can hold a total of around 31 kilograms of hydrogen, giving it a range of almost 400 kilometers.
Specialist drivers are specially trained to operate the truck, and it can only be serviced by approved specialist companies. Buying a truck of this type is still very expensive today, so we decided, with our partner Cargolux, to lease it through the German company Hylane, which is why it also has a German number plate.
After more than 60 years of existence, our company Arthur Welter, a traditional Luxembourg family business, has now entered the world of zero emission. Today, our new hydrogen truck is just one element in a fleet of around 400 vehicles. By integrating it into our fleet, we hope to gain significant experience in managing hydrogen vehicles and the necessary infrastructure. Although we are aware that this will cost us time, patience and money, we are taking up this challenge: after all, at Arthur Welter, we have not hesitated to embark on new and complicated projects in the past, which has enabled us to get to where we are today.
We are also honored by the trust our long-standing partner Cargolux has placed in us for this ambitious project, and we will put all our energy into making it a success. We look forward to pioneering together, sharing our experiences and moving forward hand in hand.
Our challenge now is to prove that air freight works with emission-free hydrogen-powered road transport.
